Vintersorg - Hedniskhj?rtad (8,5/10) - Sweden - 1998
Metal Observer wrote:
Wow! That I may witness this, a truly original and unique debut! Vintersorg, vocalist of Folk Metal-band OTYG, graces us with five songs, in a style that had not been used before indeed.
Melodic Black Metal (including the typical vocals) meets clean, deep and passionate singing and tons of folky melodies, which as a whole enchant you into the world of VINTERSORG, just listen to the opener "Norrland", here harmonic variability is the key!
Contrary to OTYG VINTERSORG do(es) not use original folk-songs, but use them as influences for the compositions, which are a good bit heavier than OTYG's, what I actually prefer.
In the course of time VINTERSORG has further refined and enriched the sound, so who wants to hear the roots of this extraordinary project has found what he/she desired with "Hedniskj?rtad" (Heathenheart).

Vintersorg - Till Fj?lls (9/10) - Sweden - 1998

Metal Observer wrote:
After the "Hedniskhj?rtad"-EP I had been really looking forward to the first complete VINTERSORG-album and "Till Fj?lls" truly has turned out to be what I had hoped for - and then some. The DigiPak alone already more than hinted at VINTERSORG being more than the typical Sweden-Black with its white colour, but the mixture of Black-Metallic steel, atmospheric keyboard- and piano-passages and strongly Folk-influenced melodies unfolds a rare beauty.
And the mixture of all these ingredients is what makes VINTERSORG something so special, fast Melodic Black Metal meets tons of Folk-induced melodies and sparingly used Black-croaking breaks through Vintersorg's truly unique passionate vocals, which makes each composition unmistakeable VINTERSORG. And the balance is just perfect, no element is neglected or pushed into the fore, everything is forged to a harmonic whole.
As feature-tracks I'd name "F?r Jung Och Fosterland" with its short interlude of the "Hall Of The Mountain King"-theme by Edvard Grief, "Till Fj?lls" with its intense atmosphere, musically melodic Black Metal with the clear vocals and piano in the background, brilliant (!), "Hednad I Ulvermanens Tecken", only consisting of piano and vocals, "Isjungfrun", which is ennobled by Cia Hedmark's great soprano and the closing "Fangad Utav Nordens Sj?l" with its great chorus.
Here you will get Metal with passion and dedication as you will not find often!

Vintersorg - ?demarkens Son (9/10) - Sweden - 1999

Metal Observer wrote:
Intensive. This is the word you could put the second album of the OTYG-member and now soloist VINTERSORG into. The songs on "?demarkens Son" are familiar, but in the same moment new, are standing in one line with "Hedniskhj?rtad" and "Till Fj?lls", but again different. Mystic, Nordic folklore meets blackish Metal, is transcended by absolutely unique clear vocals from the wideness of the Swedish forests, but spans into the present with intelligently implemented riffs, which are taken from traditional Metal.
"N?r Alver Sina Runor Sjungit", "?demarkens Son", "Pa Landet", "Sv?ltvinter", they all impress with the amalgamation of these ingredients, which conjure up a very intensive atmosphere, when moulded together.

Vintersorg - Cosmic Genesis (8/10) - Sweden - 2000

Metal Observer wrote:
From the pasture to the outer limits?Haha, that sounded kinda cool, eh? Well, it also makes a bit of sense if you apply that remark in comparison with VINTERSORG's '99 release, "?demarkens Son" with their latest outing, "Cosmic Genesis".
Although this album remains signature VINTERSORG, there are also many new and experimental elements that appear within the margins of "Cosmic Genesis". As the title may perhaps indicate, there are several electronic tinkerings to be found, but not to be scoffed at. The mere mention of the word "electronic" can send some thrashers into a fit of disgust, but let me assure you that the select passages are done so in good taste, and even contribute a great deal in conjunction with the theme of the album.
But as I've said here, the album is undoubtedly and naturally VINTERSORG. The folk-inspired writing is ever present, as is the mirror-like Black Metal-flip side which contrasts, yet coincides with the musical variety that every VINTERSORG-fan has come to expect.
One thing I have really come to enjoy about VINTERSORG, is their sound and production. Instead of going for the easy kill with heavy as Devy, crunchy as the Cap'n production, VINTERSORG opt for more of an old school-rock/hard rock-tone. Some more sustain would have been nice, but the sound in general comes across as quite stripped down, and natural. To me, that's what VINTERSORG is all about.
Oh, and before I forget (as if!), Vintersorg's (the man) vocals are ~censored~ amazing! I don't know how, but he managed to improve a great deal from the terrific job he did on "?demarkens Son". Everyone has heard great vocalists in Metal before, but this guy sings with an unrivaled passion. That's not to say he's better than every vocalist out there, but it certainly sounds as if he sings more so from the heart than anyone I've heard behind the mic.
Fade to Black: Great album for those who enjoy quality and craftsmanship. Everything from the artwork to the core of the CD is worth any serious thrasher's attention.

Vintersorg - Visions From The Spiral Generator (9/10) - Sweden - 2002

Metal Observer wrote:
Here we have VINTERSORG's awaited follow-up to his masterpiece "Cosmic Genesis". A fair bit has changed since then. First of all, there is a real band playing the music this time around. There is now a real, human drummer, as opposed to the drum machine used in the past. While the machine was used quite well on previous albums, nothing can compare to Asgeir from BORKNAGAR. Also, handling the bass on this album is Steve DiGiorgio (TESTAMENT, DEATH, etc.). These two extra members really make a difference to the sound.Second, the overall style of music has been altered. While some can argue that most folk elements were absent on "Cosmic Genesis", they are even less on this album. Instead, Mr.V has further explored the musical areas only touched upon in his previous effort. In fact, the only two songs that bear any real resemblance to this style are "Spegelsfaren" and "A Star-Guarded Coronation". The music is much more progressive, yet a little more aggressive, even downright brutal ("Trance Locator"), and is much more involving. Some would even call it weird ("ESP Mirage").
This is not background music, folks. In fact, the complexity of the music may be a turn-off to many, as it was for me on my initial listen. However, the second listen surprised me as I started to "get" the album. And with each listen, more and more layers were/are revealed. It is also clear that Mr.V has taken some influence from his time spent with BORKNAGAR ("Universums Dunkla Alfabet", "The Explorer"), however, I would not call this BORKNAGAR II, as some seem to be saying.
Vintersorg's voice has expanded on each and every album. And this one is no exception. His range is the largest it's ever been; yet he can still growl with the best of 'em. He's still testing the limits of his vocal chords, which can be a blessing as well as a curse, as it takes some real patience to swallow parts like the opening of "ESP Mirage."
"Visions From The Spiral Generator" does not top "Cosmic Genesis", but then again, I did not expect it to. But this album comes in at a close second, and that's fine with me. (Online September 28, 2002)

Vintersorg - The Focusing Blur (8/10) - Sweden - 2004

Metal Observer wrote:
I have never been attached to this band in any way. Their pre Avant-garde albums are supposed to be great and from what I?ve heard it sounds very atmospheric and tempting. I accidentally bought ?Visions From The Spiral Generator? because of the fine musician line-up but ended up being very disappointed with the whole thing. It was a bad execution of a rather interesting idea. I had already given up on the band but when I heard a 4-minute montage of the new album I couldn?t help but think to myself ?maybe this will work after all? and here I am listening to ?The Focusing Blur?, satisfied with the outcome.Take one look at the song titles above, how many of them hint at a very complex album? That?s right, all of them except ?Curtains?. VINTERSORG: once a band for heathens and people bound to the beauty of nature now a multicoloured generator; VINTERSORG himself is starting to make some sense by combining his lyrical matters, speaking his opinions from a universal perspective and breaking the tradition of singing in his native tongue.
My number one complaint towards ?Visions From The Spiral Generator? was the low-grade in structure; if you?re going to make experimental music it wouldn?t hurt to have some structure over your compositions so the listeners can navigate through a song. Ok experimental music should distract and confuse you at first but as long as it?s interesting and well done it?ll do. The bands pilgrimage to find new sounds continues, so brace yourself for this one cause the music is even more ~censored~ up but also has better structures within the songs, not so damn vibrating if you like.
Having an intro and one outro immediately adds a more rational level of structure to the album. The album has a more sedative atmosphere, songs like ?The Essence?, ?A Sphere In A Sphere (To Infinity)? and ?A Microscopical Macrocosm? have plenty of acoustic guitars and other warm touches, which definitely allows you to sit back and enjoy the music. ?Curtains? is nothing but a misleading song title; definitely the weirdest thing on the album, so weird it makes me wonder if VINTERSORG?s mental condition is all that well he he.
Like the previous album ?The Focusing Blur? has some outstanding musicians; taking part in VINTERSORG?s new vision are Steve DiGiorgio on the bass and BORKNAGAR?s drum machine Asgeir Mickelson, both doing their jobs flawlessly.
I was very sceptic at first (even after hearing the samples); with all the activities in Mr. Hedlund?s life (HAVAYOTH, ION VEIN, FISSION, BORKNAGAR and countless other projects) you damn well should suspect a rushed product, but I guess the man has been extremely ?focused? when making the album, you can hear there?s an artist at work here.
On their way of making a sound that truly is special and less Black Metal with each release, the band has captured me with a profound grip of Progressive Metal known as ?The Focusing Blur?, get this if you?re into SOLEFALD, BORKNAGAR and other Avant-garde Metal explorers. (Online February 26, 2004)

VINTERSORG - Solens R?tter (9/10) - Sweden - 2007

DisAgreement Online wrote:
Andreas Hedlund aka Vintersorg is the main man behind his same called band. Guitarist Mattias Marklund is the other permanent member. Bass and drums are played by session musicians and other instruments are provided by samples. After a break of three years, Vintersorg now releases its sixth CD Solens R?tter. In one way, this record can be considered as a ?back to basics? decision. The song structures are less progressive than on their previous album The Focusing Blur. Furthermore the English lyrics had to make room for Swedish ones, also helping to transform music again into a folk direction as has already been the case on their early records. But this doesn?t mean that the music is easy to digest, as the progressive side of Vintersorg is still existent. This gets combined with melodic metal, black metal and folk metal, an unusual mix that harmonizes surprisingly well. Vintersorg is doing all the vocals and frequently changes from longer clean parts to shorter growls. The songwriting is on an extremely high technical level with a lot of variation. The opener D?pt I En J?kelsj? gives a short overview of the broad Vintersorg repertoire, and the following Perfektionisten hasn?t stolen its title. Even though they are sampled, the flutes, harps, violins and even trombones are working hand in hand with the traditional metal instruments. The high number of breaks may disturb some listeners, but the abrupt passages from violent shouts to acoustic guitars are what make their music so exciting. More conventional are the pure prog metal tracks Att Bygga En Ruin and Fran Materia Till Ande, and the classic and calmer folk metal songs Stralar and Vad Aftonvindens Andning Viskar.
The lyrical concept of Solens R?tter is the relationship between nature, mankind and the cosmos. The guy on the album cover is not Gambrinus from the Battin beer bottles, but an alchemist trying to keep equilibrium between the the aforementioned forces. Solens R?tter is a creative and innovative album that makes you always discover other elements. And that?s what makes a good album.
